Over the counter acne
medication is an option only when treating mild to moderate cases of acne, also known as Grade I and Grade II acne severity. In moderately severe to severe, or cystic acne cases, the best course of action is to consult a dermatologist. It is advisable to find out what type and severity of acne is involved before deciding on a course of treatment.
In cases where acne is not severe, there are many different types of over the counter acne products that can help control acne breakout. These products, which are available in better pharmacies, are classified into three categories: topical, systemic and procedural. The choice of one category over the others depends on the grade and severity of the acne breakout.
Topical over the counter acne solutions
These are based on a number of different formulations:
Salicylic Acid. The main intention of this pimple treatment ingredient is to revive skin cells by aiding the skin to eliminate dead cells more thoroughly. This acne treatment ingredient is also impressive on blackheads and whiteheads.
Benzoyl Peroxide works by neutralizing the bacteria that cause acne. It also clears pores of any material that is blocking the pores.
Alcohol and Acetone. Alcohol, has a similar action to Benzoyl Peroxide in the sense that it has antibacterial effects, minimizing acne infection. Acetone minimizes the formation of skin oil, that is, it has an astringent effect on the skin.
It is not unusual to experiment with various treatments before settling on the most effective over the counter acne remedy for the acne sufferer. It may also take time as it make take several applications over a few days or even months, before that ‘eureka moment’ happens.
Keep in mind that if your acne issue does not respond to over the counter acne treatment, say if it is of the cystic acne variety, medical consultation would be a good way to go. Your dermatologist may recommend a combination of two or more treatment strategies and will be able to advise you on the level of consistency and support available to help you resolve the issue with acne.
